TE WIKI O TE REO MĀORI TĪHATE 2025
KUPU + ACTIVISM

Inspired by the words of Toihau Prof Rawinia Higgins, Māori Language Comissioner who after this government decided to exclude all Māori words from any new books in the Ministry of Education's series for five-year-olds said...

"Six Māori words in a kids' book is 'too many'? Te reo Māori is an official language of Aotearoa. Our 5-year-olds can handle it. The problem isn’t literacy – it’s prejudice ʻNot today, Coloniser!ʻ Enough of this pettiness."

Māori Language Week

Giving back to the community

We strongly believe in reciprocity, sharing pūkenga (skills) and giving back to communities you live and operate in. For Whāinga, we operate a free weekly Te Reo Māori class to our Te Awakairangi, Lower Hutt hapori whānui.

Established to support the revitalisation of Te Reo Māori through playing games. It is held every week on a Thursday, and we have a goal of learning 5000 kupu (words)!  The kaupapa is underpinned by 3 core values – Manawa, our love for Te Reo Māori, Manaaki - Caring for each other on our own learning journey, and Māhaki - we’re humble and always learning.

Kai, Kōrero, Kēmu – Te Awakairangi is open to everyone at any stage of their language learning journey. Our hapori (community) members range from our tamariki/mokopuna to kaumatua and kuia. We have a range of professions who join, from teachers, to tradesman, gym instructors, and nurses.  managers. All of which want to develop their Te Reo Māori skills.

Sessions are held every Thursday night

6pm-8pm, 28 Cornwall Street
